Very solid Szechuan place! Spicy crispy beef (5/5) - They have shredded the beef, so when fried, the texture and spicy beef flavor is even more amazing! Spicy crispy shrimp (5/5) - The shrimp is really tender. But what was truly amazing was the remnants. Onion, green pepper, peanuts, and the fried red pepper that normally you don't eat and throwaway, but since it's fried, it's edible and good! Mung bean jelly noodles (5/5) - The jelly noodles have great jelly texture and the spicy chili oil is so irresistible, I could just slurp it up! Walnut shrimp (5/5) - I had this dish 8 years ago in Hong Kong and I've been on the hunt for a place here that serves it ever since. This is the closest I've found to what is now a hazy recollection of truly exceptional, which makes this dish pretty exceptional too. The other dishes - pork ribs, snow pea leaves, fuqi fei pian, duck with bao buns - were ok, nothing noteworthy. Overall, quite a few extraordinary dishes that have stood out to me, so would highly recommend!

All the food we ordered was fantastic, but be warned - spicy is spicy (this coming from veterans of many Szechuan meals). The mapo tofu, mung bean noodles, and crispy chicken were all highlights. We did have to chase down the waiter for water refills and the bill, otherwise this would be a 5/5 review. Overall, great food at a fair price.

It's been just under a decade since Chow House started their reign as one of Manhattan's most consistent Chinese spots and have showed no signs of slowing down. They had me nervous during the pandemic, but have managed to stay afloat with high quality Sichuan fare and excellent service. The ubiquity of Sichuan cuisine has become the hottest (#1) Chinese regional specialty in the country, the popularity has played well in their favor. The American-sounding name "Chow House" doesn't evoke the same sentiment as their Chinese name (德悦轩), a joyous pavillion. Ultimately they are a very authentic restaurant and is easily the most legit option in the West Village. They've managed to do a pretty good job with the interior, which maximizes their narrow layout and is decked out with traditional Chinese style furniture and decor. I love the paintings and the subtle art pieces laid throughout the place and even love their dishware. They have a bar complete with baijiu bottles and a solid private area in the basement downstairs ideal for hosting 30-40 folks. While I feel the portions of the food have gotten a bit smaller (#2), the presentation of their dishes is on point. There are a lot of must-order dishes here, which includes their Chongqing spicy chicken (重庆辣子鸡), mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐), dan dan noodles (担担面), aromatic beef (五香牛肉), Sichuan sliced beef with tripe (夫妻肺片), the braised fish filet in bean sauce (豆瓣魚片), and their sauteed cumin lamb (孜然羊). Just ordering any combination of these dishes should satisfy the spiceheads in any group and among their best stuff. I do think their soup dumplings (小籠包) and dry pot cauliflower (乾鍋花菜) are not their strongest dishes. While some gringo palates are likely to rock the general tso's, I can actually say their Americanized dishes are quite good too. Lastly, I have had some epic experiences here with a number of people over the years. CJ the owner has always been kind and welcoming and his staff has done an excellent job ensuring that everyone on my end gets fed and leaves satisfied. They work extremely hard and have defied the notion that good Chinese food and service can absolutely co-exist. __________ (#1) Figuratively and literally. (#2) Shrinkflation?
